Each homestand, the Isotopes will publish a Q & A with one of its players or coaches, hosted by Isotopes
broadcaster Josh Suchon. In this week’s edition, Suchon talks with utility player Charlie Condon.
Josh Suchon: I want to take a big picture view about the
Paci昀椀c Coast League and the perceptions of it coming into
the season. Now that reality has set in, how would you
compare and contrast?
Charlie Condon: I’d say it’s been more of an adjustment
defensively than anything else. Obviously the altitude and
weather are going to make the ball 昀氀y out a little more but
it doesn’t change my approach I’d say. It’s changed a lot
of the work I’ve had to put in the out昀椀eld, with covering
a bigger space and how balls 昀氀y and 昀椀nd gaps. Playing the
out昀椀eld is a much more challenging position to play.
Suchon: In terms of pitching, we’ve faced a number of guys
on MLB rehab assignment. How do you think facing those
pitchers has helped you?
Condon: Triple-A is a very di昀昀erent feeling than the rest of the Minor League levels I’ve played at. It
feels like an extended bench for each MLB team. It’s been great to face guys going up and down. It’s great
exposure against really good competition and that’s all you can ask for.
Suchon: You’ve recorded a chunk of your extra-base hits over the last few weeks of the season. Is this the
best you’ve felt this year?
Condon: I would say so. I came o昀昀 a strong spring training individually and carried that into the beginning
of the year. But as baseball happens, you run into some speed bumps. I de昀椀nitely feel like I’m 昀椀nding my
swing and approach, and the results are luckily indicating that.
Suchon: When it comes to those speed bumps, you’ve still drawn a lot walks. How important is it to still
draw walks and not making those speed bumps larger?
Condon: It’s a good point because when you hit those bumps it kind of feels like you have to hit your
way out of it. You can 昀椀nd yourself swinging at pitches you shouldn’t be swinging at and just trying to
make things happen. In reality, if you’re not swinging it well or not seeing it well walks are going to be the
biggest way you can still contribute to the team when you’re not hitting. Sticking to the process and not
trying to force things to happen is huge.
